Wardo Restaurant: An Authentic Chinese-Indonesian Restaurant in Salcedo Village (Makati City)
If the pandemic didn’t happen, I would have visited Indonesia back in 2020. I was getting ready to do a massive food trip and try Bali’s Babi Guling (Indonesian roast suckling pig) and Jakarta’s Nasi Goreng (fried rice). As I wait, I will have to satisfy myself with Indonesian food here in the Philippines. It’s a good thing that there is an Indonesian restaurant in Salcedo Village, Makati City—Wardo Restaurant.
Formerly called Warung Indo, Wardo serves authentic Chinese-Indonesian food. It’s open twenty four hours, six days a week, and they have a constant stream of dine-in customers and delivery orders.
You’ll find Wardo in one of the less busy streets of Salcedo Village. If you’re not paying attention, you might easily miss it. But once you find it, you’ll be rewarded with delicious food.
One of them is Gado-Gado, a traditional Indonesian mixed salad composed of slightly boiled vegetables, tofu, and a nutty sauce. Wardo’s version is nutty, garlicky, sweet, spicy, and a world of textures. I never would’ve thought that I’d love this Indonesian salad!
If you want other appetizers, you can also try the Tempe Tahu Sambal Terasi (Tempe and Tofu with Sambal Terasi). Tempe or Tempeh is an Indonesian fermented soybean cake. It was long consumed by Indonesians before it even hit the vegan market.
Let’s talk about some of their mains, including their best selling Nasi Goreng Ayam Penyet. The Ayam Penyet (traditional marinated chicken) is juicy, tender, and has a crisp skin, just like a Pinoy fried chicken. The Nasi Goreng (fried rice) is delicious; it has a sweet note perhaps due to kicap manis (sweet soy sauce). There’s also a side condiment made with toasted coconut and it’s nice!
Another bestseller is the Nasi Goreng Sate (special fried rice with satay, omelette, and prawn crackers). It uses the same fried rice but is paired with delicious chicken skewers!
If you want noodles, I recommend the Bakmi Goreng Ayam, which is sweet and smoky. It’s like a glorified version of Lucky Me’s Sweet and Spicy Pancit Canton, a popular instant noodles. I say that as a compliment!
I also recommend their Mie Soup Daging or Indonesian-style beef noodle soup. It has a flavorful broth and, if I remember correctly, a combination of 2 kinds of noodles.
There are other tasty dishes I’ve tried but I won’t talk about it so I can encourage you to find out for yourself how good Wardo Restaurant is. While waiting for my Indonesia trip, I’ll just have to keep coming back and try more Indonesian food (gotta try their Beef Rendang). I highly recommend this restaurant to you!
