When I was researching for food spots to visit in Phuket, consistently present in every list is One Chun Cafe and Restaurant. It is known for serving Phuketian and Southern Thai food. Its food is so good that it was awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand.
One Chun is housed in a Sino-Portuguese structure. It has a retro interior adorned with antique furnitures, old wall clocks, and vintage TVs and radios. All of these make the restaurant charming.
When we queued, we were directed to wait at the back of the restaurant. It’s a courtyard, which is typical in Sino-Portuguese architecture or Peranakan (of Malay/Thai and Chinese ancestry) houses.
We ordered the following:
Deep-Fried Eggs with Minced Pork: The eggs are crisp and airy. Although its bordering on the oily side, it is still comforting. The accompanying sauce is tangy and spicy.
Moo Hong: A classic Phuketian dish, this is made with pork belly stewed with soy sauce and spices (like coriander roots, peppercorns, and star anise). For Filipinos, think of this as the Thai version of Adobo or Humba.
One Chun’s Moo Hong has a flavorful and peppery stew, and its pork is tender and has melt-in-the-mouth fat. It’s delicious! (By the way, this reads as “Traditional Phuket-Style Steamed Pork Belly” in their menu. So don’t be confusted.)
Stir-Fried Squid with Salted Egg: The squid is perfectly cooked and is covered with creamy and grainy sauce (though it’s a tad sweet for me). The veggies add crunch.
We ate these dishes with Steamed Rice, which is placed in a nice ceramic bowl. I find it cute so I have to show it here. LOL.
Of course, we washed down our meal with Local Phuket-Style Iced Milk Tea with Glass Jelly. It’s refreshing especially in the Phuket heat.
There are many other Phuketian and Southern Thai dishes that are popular in One Chun, such as Crab Meat Curry with Kanom Jeen (rice noodles) and Stir-Fried Sataw (Stink Beans) with Prawns. But we’re allergic to crustaceans so we didn’t try it.
I read that the owners of One Chun are related to the owners of Raya Restaurant, another popular restaurant that serves Phuketian food and also housed in a Sino-Portuguese structure. Raya is more upscale than One Chun in terms of its interior and pricing. But we went to One Chun instead because it’s listed in the MICHELIN Guide as of this time of writing. Anyway…
One Chun Cafe and Restaurant has a charming space and delicious food. Plus, it’s a food spot where you can try Phuketian cuisine. It should be in every Phuket eat-inerary, in my opinion. I highly recommend it to you!
