You can’t go wrong with crispy pork belly and roast meats. When we were in Thailand, whether in Bangkok (check my Bangkok Food Trip series starting here) or Phuket, we would always find ourselves ordering crispy pork belly or Moo Krob/Mu Krop as it is locally called.
In Phuket, one famous spot for Moo Krob is Mu Krop Chi Hong. It’s an unassuming hole-in-the-wall that specializes on roast meats. Their meats are so good that the MICHELIN Guide has recently awarded them with a Bib Gourmand distinction.
My wife tried a plate of Moo Krob on top of rice. It’s fatty, tender, and rightly salted, and has a super crisp skin. This is easily the best crispy pork belly we have had in Thailand and maybe even in our entire lives!
Of course, I didn’t settle for just one kind of meat so I got the Crispy Pork + Chicken + Red Roasted Pork + Chinese Sausage. The chicken is tender, the red roasted pork or Char Siu is flavorful and rightly sweet, and the Chinese sausage isn’t to sweet like others, which I like.
I also have to mention that the rice is like the ones in Hainanese Chicken Rice. It’s packed with flavor!
Don’t forget to ask for their soup, which is tasty and gingery.
The meats are already good by themselves. But you can elevate it with their sauces and kick it up with their chilies.
To wash down all the meaty goodness, I ordered their Iced Black Coffee. It’s cold, strong, and sweetened, perfect for the Phuket heat!
And the best part? It’s super affordable! Would you believe that my plate of four meats, which is the largest portion available, is only THB90, which is less than PHP150 or USD3! In the Philippines, a plate of three meats would cost at least PHP400 or roughly USD8.
We almost skipped Mu Krop Chi Hong in our Phuket eat-inerary and I’m glad we didn’t. Chi Hong is a good example of what Thai street food should be—delicious and cheap! I highly recommend Mu Krop Chi Hong to you!
