When my wife and I were planning for our long Thailand trip, we already anticipated that we would need a break from Thai food. It’s not that Thai food becomes boring after a while; far from it! Rather, we would need something to remind us of home. So we decided to eat Western food in Thailand (we’re so used to Western food in the Philippines).
My wife, who loves all things British, discovered an authentic pub called The Londoner Brew Pub. Legit British food is virtually nonexistent in the Philippines so going there was a no-brainer.
The Londoner is a British gastropub, sports bar, and microbrewery in Bangkok. It was established in 1997 (making it the oldest gastropub and microbrewery in the city) by a veteran from London who found Bangkok to lack a decent British pub to have a beer and watch sporting events. Its kitchen is helmed by Chef Yao, the Captain of the Thai National Cooking Association. Customers are assured of quality ingredients and exceptional cooking.
We went on a Sunday and it was packed. If I recall correctly, most of the diners are non-Thais, probably expats.
There was also an acoustic band. They were playing my favorite Michael Jackson songs!
They also have British newspapers that the diners can borrow. But it’s a week delayed! LOL.
As the oldest microbrewery, they have beer on tap. It’s too bad I wasn’t able to try it!
Anyway, let me talk about the food we tried. While the menu has Thai, German, and other Western food, we went for classic British dishes. Since we went on a Sunday, The Londoner was offering a Sunday Roast for that day. We got the Londoner Mixed Roast, which has roast beef sirloin, chicken, lamb, and pork. (If you prefer only one kind of meat, you may also do so. They even offer a vegan version. But where’s the fun in that? LOL.)
The chicken and pork are on the dry side (but I like the pork’s crackling skin). But fortunately, the beef and lamb are tender. In fact, I love the latter and is my favorite on the plate.
The Sunday Roast comes with cheesy cauliflower, crisp veggies, huge roasted potato halves, and naturally-sweet green peas. It also comes with the staple Yorkshire Pudding. Unfortunately, it’s tasteless.
Another dish we tried is Londoner Fish N ‘ Chips. It’s a Lake Toba white fish fillet covered with Londoner Pilsner beer batter, and served with chips, garden peas, housemade tartar sauce, and a house pickled onion.
The batter is crisp, and the fish is moist and juicy.
If I’m not mistaken, The Londoner has a happy hour. So we got their red wine and sangria at a good price.
To be honest, the food needs a bit more salt. I guess that’s how British food is supposed to be, so you can control the saltiness. So a dash of salt solves this. Anyway, we had a pleasant visit at The Londoner Brew Pub. If you want a break from Thai food and have Western food, then consider visiting it. I recommend it to you.
