This article is part of the Hong Kong Food Trip series. Check out the installments in this series: Australia Dairy Company (Cha Chaan Teng/Hong Kong-Style Cafe) | Hing Kee Restaurant (Claypot Rice) | Lin Heung Lau (Dim Sum) | Oi Man Sang (Dai Pai Dong) | Yat Lok (MICHELIN-Starred Roast Meats/Goose) | Yuk Kin Fast Food (Fried Rice)
Coming from the Philippines, I find the food in Hong Kong super expensive (it’s even double the price compared to Singapore). Dining at popular hole-in-the-walls would easily cost you a minimum of HKD100 per person. Thankfully, there are Cha Chaan Tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) and “this this rice” (food spots that serve combos of rice and two or more dishes) to help the budget-conscious travelers. If you know where to look, you’ll find food spots that won’t break the bank!
One of these spots is Yuk Kin Fast Food. Tucked in a quiet neighborhood in Sheung Wan (Hong Kong Island), this spot specializes in fried rice. I discovered this spot from a vlog of Manila-based creative couple Ralph & Sam. Thanks to them, our wallets can rest for one meal. LOL.

I tried researching about the history of Yuk Kin but the resources on it are scarce. So let’s jump straight to their food!
Before I let you know of our orders, let me just say that their fried rice is “affordable” in Hong Kong standards. For as low as HKD54, you can already have a plate of smoky fried rice. The portions are generous, too. One plate can actually feed two people!

I got their bestselling Curry Fried Rice (curry is also common in Hong Kong cuisine). It’s smoky, aromatic, and has a perfect curry flavor. It also has Chinese ham and char siu (honey barbecue pork).

If you’re ordering this, be aware that the spiciness will build with every bite. My mouth was a bit on fire by the end of our meal! LOL.

My wife got the Black Pepper & Sliced Pork Chop Fried Rice. They really meant the black pepper in the name. Thus, the fried rice is so peppery!

The pork chop is tasty and tender:

My wife and I both added fried eggs on our plates of fried rice. It’s perfectly cooked, with a runny yolk that oozes into the rice. Yum!
Look at that runny egg yolk!
This is our first meal in our Hong Kong trip. So we had to order their Hong Kong-style milk tea. It’s perfect to counter the spiciness of the curry and black pepper!

Yuk Kin Fast Food is a hidden gem (I’m puzzled that this doesn’t get much attention). They make great fried rice with affordable prices and generous portions. If you’re tight on budget (or even not), I highly recommend this spot to you!
P.S. Ralph and Sam, if you’re gatekeeping this, I’m sorry! LOL.
