Citang’s: A Popular Spot for Kakanin and Merienda in Malolos

Last Monday, I listed down a merienda (snack) place and two delicacies that I tried in Malolos (read it here). In this post, I’ll be focusing on that merienda spot—Citang’s.

Citang’s

Established in 1970 by Teresita “Citang” Ignacio, Citang’s is a favorite merienda spot in the city. Aling Citang used to peddle kakanin (rice cakes) with the help of her husband and children. Due to her kakanin’s popularity, she opened the namesake eatery.

Today, Citang’s is an institution in the city, still serving kakanin and also offering classic merienda items. They also sell pasalubong (souvenir) stuff.

Let’s talk about their kakanin. I got the 7-in-1 Kakanin Box so I could try more varieties. I’m not sure what all the names are. But I’m sure there’s Sapin-Sapin (a multi-layer and multi-color kakanin), which is rightly sweet and the softest I’ve ever tried. It’s my favorite among all the kakanin.

There’s also Kutsinta (a kakanin with a reddish-brown color due to lye water). It isn’t as soft as I wanted. But dunking it in the Yema dip (yema is a soft candy made with egg yolks and condensed milk) compensates. The dip is rightly sticky and sweet.

And an interesting kakanin is the Tamales, if I got the name right. It’s topped spiced and topped with salted egg.

Citang’s also offer savory merienda, such as Lumpiang Toge (deep-friend spring rolls with bean sprouts), Mami (noodle soup), and LTB/GTB, which is how Lugaw (rice porridge) or Goto (rice porridge with ox tripe) and Tokwa’t Baboy (deep-fried tofu with pork) is called in Malolos. They’re not the best ones I tried but are certainly comforting.

Citang’s is an institution in Malolos and should be included in your food trip in the Bulacan capital. I recommend this place to you.
