Bukit Bintang Hainanese Chicken Rice: Serving Malaysian-Style Roast Meats in Salcedo Village (Makati)
If you go to Malaysia and Singapore, you’ll notice that there are many hawker stalls and restaurants serving Hong Kong/Cantonese-style roast meats, which is a result of Cantonese migration. Now, we have the likes of the Singaporean Hawker Chan (read my review here), the formerly Michelin-starred hawker, going global and spreading roast meat goodness.
Here in the Philippines, we have a few Cantonese roast meat spots. Aside from Hawker Chan, there is Hong Kong’s Kam’s Roast, and local spots 8 Treasures Roasting and Tai Koo.
But did you know that there is a Malaysian-style roast meat stall hidden in one of the office buildings in Makati City? That stall is Bukit Bintang Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Named after a shopping and entertainment district in Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Bintang Hainanese Chicken Rice specializes in Hainanese chicken and other roast meats. It’s located in The 7th Kitchen Lounge, a food court at the seventh floor of the PBCom Tower in Salcedo Village. (I feel like I’m in a hawker center because of there are Indonesian and Malaysian stalls there. And yes, I’ll be writing more about the food court soon!)
Let’s talk about the meats. We tried all of them!
Of course, no roast meat experience would be complete without the classic Char Siew (barbecued pork), which is tender and rightly sweet, and Roasted Pork. There’s also Roasted and Steamed Chicken, which are both tender.
The meats are best eaten with their rice, which is moist and has a strong lemongrass flavor. And let’s not forget the soup, which is flavorful (can taste lemongrass and ginger) and oily.
We ordered a few of their sides, such as Bokchoy with Oyster Sauce and Bean Sprout (that’s how they spelled it). They’re both crisp and garlicky.
We also tried Tofu/Egg/Peanut Combo, which adds textures to the entire meal.
Finally, we had the Meatballs Soup. It has tasty and bouncy meatballs swimming in the same soup that came with our meal.
Bukit Bintang Hainanese Chicken Rice serves good roast meats. It’s not the best I have ever had. But for its price, I couldn’t complain. I recommend it to you.
P.S. I first tried Bukit Bintang Hainanese Chicken Rice at the Salcedo Community Market. I’m just not sure if they’re still there. And I learned that they recently opened a new stall at Ayala Malls Manila Bay.
