Borro: A New Comfort Food Spot at Scout Borromeo (Quezon City)

I’ll be honest: I’m not the biggest fan of food spots that serve comfort food. Their food, in my experience, lack a wow factor and are typically overpriced. So I try to stay away from these restaurants. Given the choice, I’ll go for spots that offer a specific cuisine or traditional food.

But I can’t ignore the rise of these spots in recent times. Some of these spots even serve outstanding food. And their food may be simple, but it definitely touches the heart. That’s what comfort food does! So I started a series on these spots. Last week, I wrote about Tablo Kitchen x Cafe (read it here).

Today, I’m writing about Borro, which I think is the newest kid on the comfort food block. It got its name from its location, which is in Scout Borromeo Street, Quezon City.

Like many comfort food spots, Borro’s interior is perfect for your Instagram fix. I like its dark wood and minimalist design:

Let’s talk about the food, starting with the freshly baked complimentary bread, which is soft and unlimited. It was so good that I had a couple rounds!

Most of the food are for sharing. So considering the prices, the dishes are value for money.

For our appetizer, we got the Super Nachos. Unfortunately, it was super disappointing. It’s sweeter than usual, and the chips got soggy due to its sauce. I don’t know how they messed up such a simple dish!

Anyway, the next dish made up for it. The Creamy Truffle Pasta has the right truffle flavor, and has a hint of smokiness. It’s full of umami! But be warned: It’s heavy and filling. So don’t forget to share it with others.

For mains, we got the Baked Bangus, which is milkfish with cheese on top. You can think of this like a baked tahong (mussels) only that bangus is used as the seafood. It’s good and cheesy, but I don’t think I’d eat a lot of it! LOL.

We also ordered their Beef Salpicao, which is garlicky, nicely seasoned, and a bit sweet. I just wished that the beef is more tender.

No comfort food feast would be complete without fried chicken. So we got the Boneless Fried Chicken, which has four huge pieces of chicken, coleslaw, and dinner rolls. The chicken is crisp, tender, and seasoned well. It feels like an elevated version of KFC, and I love it! This is easily my favorite!

The coleslaw, while crisp, has a bitter taste (I think it’s one of the lettuces). The dinner rolls, while it looks good and is soft, lack flavor (I still prefer the complimentary bread). And the gravy is tasty!

Borro offers a few desserts right now. We tried the Banana Frisuelo, which is a Spanish-style banana-filled crepe drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with cream. It’s a good banana crepe. Oddly, it has cheese on both ends of the crepe. But I wished there is more cheese, because I like a sweet and salty contrast.

Borro is still on soft opening so it’s understandable that there are improvements to be made. Overall, the food is good and our visit was pleasant. I recommend Borro to you!
