The Sunny Side Cafe (Boracay): An All-Day Breakfast Spot with A Stunning View of the Sea
I’m doing a Boracay Food Trip 2023 series this month. Check out the installments so far: Cyma Greek Taverna | Percy Seafood | Sapphire (Seafood Buffet at Henann Crystal Sands Resort)
When I researched where to eat at Boracay, The Sunny Side Cafe is consistently in every list. It’s a restaurant that serves all-day breakfast, bread, and specialty coffee. It was started in 2014 by Nowie and Odette Potenciano, the couple behind the namesake The Sunny Side Cafe Group, which consists of Coco Mama, Percy Seafood (check my review here), SpiceBird, and Supermagic. (Check out my article on the F&B group here.)
On our latest visit to Boracay, we visited The Sunny Side Cafe at its Station 1 location. At daytime, you can dine with a stunning view of the sea!
Alternatively, you can visit their original Station 3 location:
Since we’ve visited The Sunny Side Cafe a couple of times already, we’ve tried and reviewed more items already. Here’s what I think of the items we’ve tried so far (in alphabetical order):
Food
Bacon and Mango Grill Cheese: This hefty sandwich is a Sunny Side cafe bestseller. I like the combination of the sweet mango jam, thick and crisp bacon, and salty and creamy cheese. Then it’s all sandwiched between two humongous slices of soft bread. It’s definitely one of my favorites in the cafe!
Sunny Side’s grilled cheese sandwiches comes with tomato soup and a choice of side salad or sweet potato hay. I find the soup sweet (perhaps a bit more sweet than usual), tangy, and peppery. I got the sweet potato hay, which add crunch to the dish.
Chorizo and Eggs: The chorizo isn’t the typical sweet kind. Rather, it’s on the savory side. It’s also flavorful and slightly spicy.
Kitayama Beef Tapsilog (stands for tapa or marinated beef, sinangag or garlic fried rice, and itlog or egg): The beef tapa is made with brisket (it’s my first time to try a beef tapa made with brisket). It’s tender, slightly sweet, and acidic probably due to its marinade (with vinegar?). This is another favorite of mine!
The Sunny Side Cafe Roesti: Think of roesti as the Swiss version of a grated potato frittata. I find the potato plain but the house-made crumbled chorizo makes up for it. The runny egg yolk adds creaminess and tomato a refreshing crunch.
The Sunny Side Eggs Benedict: It has bacon, which is thick and fatty. We asked the poached egg to be well done and it’s surprisingly still good. The hollandaise add acidity to the entire dish. The bread (English muffin) is a letdown, as it’s dry, chewy, and lack taste.
Tuna Salpicao: It’s just okay. I don’t find it garlicky except if you eat the garlic in it.
Beverages
The Sunny Side Cafe has a blend that’s exclusively roasted by the EDSA Specialty Beverages in Manila. So you know that their coffee is good!
Here are the beverages I’ve tried so far:
Sugar Toast Iced Latte: It’s perfectly sweet and creamy. There a vanilla custard crumbs on it and underneath. It feels weird but it works.
When you’re in Boracay, make sure to have one breakfast (or meal) at The Sunny Side Cafe. And if possible, visit the Station 1 branch so you can dine with a view of the sea. I recommend The Sunny Side Cafe to you.
