Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day…even though I tend to miss it because I wake up late. Oh, the irony! But whenever I travel, I do my best to start the day with it. So when we were in Bangkok, I made sure to try what is probably the most famous local breakfast spot in the city—On Lok Yun.

The Old-School Facade of On Lok Yun

Founded in 1933, On Lok Yun is a local cafe that serves Thai-style Western breakfast. The cafe is located inside a shophouse, and is adorned with vintage cabinets and old tin cans of Milo, the Nestle choco-malt drink popular in Southeast Asia. I think the place is charming!

I arrived at almost 10:07AM and, as expected, there was a queue. I was kind of a rush that day as I need to visit some tourist sites. I was tempted to skip the spot. But I’m glad I didn’t!

I got seated at around 10:30AM so that’s about a 23-minute wait.

Look at all those condiments!

The staff served me a complimentary hot tea. But of course, I had to get my coffee fix so I got their Signature (Iced) Coffee. It’s creamy with a hint of bitterness. I wished it was stronger.

I got the 1 Egg + 4 Toppings so I could try all their breakfast meats, which are bacon, ham, sausage, and Chinese sausage. There’s nothing spectacular about the meats but it’s definitely comforting.

The only unusual meat, at least to a Filipino like me, is the Chinese sausage. It’s super chewy and meat. Then I was asked if I wanted my egg fried or scrambled. I got the former and the yolk is runny. (Okay, where’s my garlic rice! LOL.)

For my carbs, I got the Steamed Bread with Kaya (coconut egg jam). The bread is so soft and fluffy, and the kaya is custardy and has a nice coconut flavor.

On Lok Yun is truly a historic breakfast place. Not only did it stand the test of time and brings nostalgia to its loyal following, but it also serves familiar and comforting food. It may not be super Thai food, but I think you should still give it a try when you’re in Bangkok. I highly recommend On Lok Yun to you!
