Last Thursday, I wrote my review of Itik Salai Mashtar (read it here). Located just outside of Kuala Lumpur, this restaurant is known for their smoked duck curry, and has received the praise of many food vloggers. We went to find if the hype is real. And it’s real indeed!
But after an amazing smoked duck curry meal, we needed some dessert or sweets. Thankfully, there was a nearby stall selling Malay Kuih—Keria Gala Melaka Sg Ramal.
To the uninitiated, kuih (also spelled Koay or Kueh) refers to handmade snacks or desserts. It’s like the Filipino counterpart of kakanin, which is the collective term for rice cakes.
Different Malaysian cultures have their own kuih, such as the Chinese and the Peranakans (mix of Chinese and Malay). While I’ve tried Chinese and Peranakan kuih, I haven’t tried Malay ones. So I took the opportunity to try it at Kuih Keria Sg Ramal.
Their specialty, as its name suggests, is Kuih Keria, which are sweet potato donuts covered in either gula melaka (palm sugar) or gula putih (white sugar).
It’s creamy and earthy. I like the one covered in palm sugar because it has a nice caramel sweetness, reminding me of Kamote Que (Filipino deep-fried sweet potato on skewers) but in doughnut form. And these Malay doughnuts are simply addicting!
Another kuih that I tried is the Popia Sambal. It’s deep-fried spring rolls filled with vegetables (bean sprouts in the case of Kuih Keria Sg Ramal) and covered in sweet and spicy glaze.
It’s crunchy and tasty, and it’s like the Filipino vegetable lumpia but sweet and spicy.
Other kuih available in Keria Gula Melaka Sg Ramal are:
Cek Mek Molek or “Beautiful Lady”: It’s like kuih keria (so also made with sweet potatoes) but has the sugar inside than as a coating.
Cucur Badak: It’s sweet potato dough filled with spicy dried shrimp and coconut filling.
Karipap Kentang (Malaysian Curry Puff): A pastry filled with curried potato filling.
If you’re coming from Itik Salai Mashtar, then don’t miss out on Keria Gula Melaka Sg Ramal, especially their sweet potato doughnuts. As I’m writing this article, I’m thinking about it, wishing I should’ve gotten more. Well, that’s a reason to come back!
Anyway, I highly recommend Keria Gula Melaka Sg Ramal to you!
