On one of our days in George Town, we had a heavy Nasi Kandar meal at Hameediyah Restaurant (read my review here). After all the flavorful food and rich curries, it would be good to follow it up with dessert. Thankfully, Hema Hema is in the same street (Lebuh Campbell) where Hameediyah is, and is just a few minutes away!
Hema Hema is an artisanal ice cream shop that opened in 2022. Since its opening, it’s being flocked by locals and tourists alike. But is the hype real? We went to find out.
We arrived past 3PM and were surprised that there was only a short queue. But when we’re inside, the people started coming in!
I like that they make their own waffle cones.
I asked the staff what their bestsellers are. But they couldn’t give me an answer because all flavors are good, and the flavors rotate weekly. They have Classic, Premium (plus MYR2), and Double Premium (plus MYR5) flavors. But whatever flavor you get, you’ll definitely have a rich and velvety gelato!

I tried the 70% Chocolate, which has a nice chocolate flavor, and their classic Lotus Biscoff, which has a nice, buttery Biscoff flavor.
My wife tried the Blue Tahiti Vanilla Bean and Burnt Butter & Sage, which are both good.
Hema Hema Ice Cream makes good gelato and creates flavors that are unique. Their gelato is also refreshing in the Penang heat. Now I understand what the hype is all about. I highly recommend it to you!
