Restoran Wong Mei Kee: Serving the Best Roast Meats (Including the Best Crispy Pork Belly) in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Only Open for Three Hours! (With MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Recognition)

I’ve been wanting to return to Kuala Lumpur (KL), which is undeniably a food paradise. So after our Penang (food) trip (check out my Penang Food Guide here) and before we went to Singapore (SG articles coming soon!), we spent a couple of days in the Malaysian capital. And at the top of my eatinerary is Restoran Wong Mei Kee, a restaurant that specializes in Cantonese roast meats.

Restoran Wong Mei Kee

I first learned about Wong Mei Kee when Trevor James (a.k.a. The Food Ranger) featured it back in 2020 (at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when I binge-watched food vlogs!). What caught my interest is that his wife, Ting, who is from Guangdong (China) where Cantonese roast meats abound, said that Wong Mei Kee has better roast meats than the ones in China! Since then, I’ve set my mind to return to KL and visit Wong Mei Kee!

In the MICHELIN Guide’s inaugural launch in Kuala Lumpur and Penang in December 2022, Wong Mei Kee was given a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand recognition. After this, food bloggers/vloggers have been featuring the restaurant, becoming a viral sensation.

Chef Wong in Action

We went on a Tuesday and arrived slightly later than 12PM, which is Wong Mei Kee’s opening time. But even though it just opened, the restaurant was already packed with hungry diners. Thankfully, the queue was short (but it got longer after us).

Wong Mei Kee is packed with diners!

The Queue After Us

After placing our orders, we looked for a vacant seat and waited for almost an hour. So is it worth the wait?

Wong Mei Kee is known for making the best siu yuk (also spelled as siew yok) or crispy pork belly, which sells out in only three hours! Its owner, Chef Wong, carefully chooses his pork, ensuring that it has a good fat to lean meat ratio. Then he cooks it in a barrel over charcoal.

I believe this is Chef Wong’s grandson chopping the roast pork

Their crispy pork belly (Crispy Siew Yok in Wong Mei Kee’s menu) is juicy, tender, and fatty. Its skin is crisp and salty, and its drippings are a mix of salty and slightly sweet. It’s definitely one of best crispy pork bellies I have ever tried in my life!

We also tried their Char Siew (or char siu), which is Cantonese-style barbecue pork. Their version is fatty and tender, and has the perfect sweetness in my opinion. It also reminds me of inihaw na liempo (Filipino grilled pork belly).

Lastly, we tried their Roasted Chicken, which is super moist and tender. It’s the best Cantonese-style roasted chicken I have ever tried!

Of course, a Cantonese barbecue feast is best eaten with rice. Thankfully, they serve Oil Rice, which is a flavorful rice.

To wash down all the meats, I had their Sour Plum Lime, which is sweet, tart, and refreshing.

So was the wait worth it? Definitely! Restoran Wong Mei Kee serves one of the best Cantonese roast meats not just in Kuala Lumpur but maybe even in the entire world, I believe! Their crispy siew yok, char siew, and roasted chicken are all top-notch, and will probably the best versions you will ever have. So if you love Cantonese roast meats, this should be on your foodie bucketlist. Needless to say, I highly recommend Wong Mei Kee to you!
