Bong & Wena’s Special Empanada & Food House (Taal, Batangas): Serving Tasty Empanadang Taal!
Last Monday, I wrote about Don Juan Boodle House (read my review here), a popular boodle fight spot in Taal (Batangas). It’s located right beside the Taal Public Market, where you can buy Taaleño delicacies and products.
One delicacy that you shouldn’t miss in the market (or in Taal) is the Empanadang Taal. They are Taal’s version of empanadas or Filipino turnover. While it can be filled with beef, chicken, or pork and mixed with vegetables, the version that’s distinctly Taal has sotanghon or rice noodles.
We tried it at Bong & Wena’s Special Empanada & Food House. It is arguably the most popular empanada stall in Taal Public Market, with customers continuously flowing in.
Their empanada has a crumbly crust, with a nice sweetness to it. It has four kinds of fillings: Beef, Chicken, Ham & Cheese, Pork, and their bestselling Gulay (vegetable). Except for Ham & Cheese, I was able to try them all.
Here’s what I think:
Gulay: Has nice play of textures because of the bouncy rice noodles and crisp cabbage. It also has small shrimps in it it’s my favorite!
Beef/Pork: Has a tomato-based, meaty filling. It’s like I’m eating a menudo, a Filipino tomato-based stew. It has a slice of boiled egg, which add creaminess to the empanada.
Chicken: Has stringy chicken and a slice of boiled egg.
Bong and Wena’s Special Empanada and Food House makes good Taal empanadas. When you’re in Taal, don’t miss out on these goodies. I highly recommend it to you!
