Aling Sosing's Carinderia: The Makati Carinderia Made Famous by Mark Wiens

Last summer, I was privileged to do a collab with FoodieMommaPH (see our collab here and here, and my article here). My wife and I toured Khee Leoncio, the FoodieMomma herself, around Makati City and showed her Filipino food spots that the city is boasting of. One of our stops is Aling Sosing’s Carinderia.

Aling Sosing’s Carinderia

I used to live a few blocks away from the carinderia (eatery) but have never eaten there in my entire six-year stay. I only found out about it through Mark Wiens, one of the world’s top food vloggers and one of my inspirations. So one day, I went to my old neighborhood to try Aling Sosing’s and was not disappointed! So we thought of bringing Khee there.

The Food Selection at Aling Sosing’s Carinderia

Of course, we got their bestselling Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork belly). I love it because unlike other versions, this one is not sweet or ketchup-y, and has a a crisp skin. It’s also tasty and definitely extra rice-worthy!

Look at that Inihaw na Liempo and Tilapia

Because we already got an inihaw (grilled) item, we might as well get the Inihaw na Tilapia and Pusit (squid). The fish has a soft meat and a nice char, while the squid is rightly cooked and is stuffed with the veggies. The squid is also spicy due to siling labuyo (red chilies).

Clockwise starting from the upper right: Inihaw na Liempo, Inihaw na Tilapia, and Inihaw na Pusit

We also got their Sinaing na Tulingan (fish in vinegar) and their Ginataang Hipon (shrimp cooked in coconut cream). I’m allergic to shrimp so just check Khee’s review of it in our vlog here.

When we have tried every dish that we got, the Kalderetang Baka (beef in tomato-based stew) was almost ready so we ordered it. Unlike other recipes with many ingredients in it, theirs is made up of only beef and bell peppers, if I remember correctly. The beef is tender and the bell peppers are crisp, which makes a nice contrast.

Unfortunately, their other bestseller—the Nilagang Baka (literally “boiled beef”)—is only available by lunchtime so we weren’t able to order. But I was able to try it in my first visit. Its beef is tender and the broth is tasty. I will go back again to Aling Sosing’s for it!

If you’re coming from another country, heed Khee’s advise: “Try carinderia food and support local, Filipino food!” Aling Sosing’s Carinderia is good place to start. It’s definitely among the best spots for delicious, no-frills Filipino food. I highly recommend it to you!
