Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day…even though I tend to miss it because I wake up late. Oh, the irony! But whenever I travel, I do my best to start the day with it. In Phuket, one of the popular breakfast items is Roti.

To the uninitiated, Roti is a flatbread that’s stretched and cooked on a griddle. In Phuket City, there are two institutions that serve this dish: Roti Chaofa and Roti Taew Nam. While both are MICHELIN Bib Gourmand awardees, I went to the latter because the former was closed when I visited.

Located in Phuket Old Town, Roti Taew Nam (sometimes spelled as Roti Thaew Nam) serves Roti that’s cooked on a griddle heated by charcoal. You can pair their Roti with curries and Thai coffee or tea.

I tried their 2 Plain Roti with 1 Egg. The Roti is crisp and flaky, and egg yolk is creamy. What’s interesting is that they shred the Roti into smaller pieces using a plate. I’m not sure how it affects the Roti.

I never thought that a simple dish would taste so good!

I also tried the Banana + Egg Roti as my sweet Roti. Unlike the plain roti, this one isn’t shredded.

As far as I can remember, I haven’t had the combination of banana and egg in a Roti. But to my surprise, it works! The banana adds sweetness and the egg some creaminess. If you want more sweetness, dip it in the condensed milk or sugar (or both, if you want to risk diabetes LOL) provided.

I was full from eating Mee Ton Poe’s Hokkien Mee (see my review here) so I only got to try one curry—Beef Massaman. The beef is tender but I find it on the sweet side.

Of course, a Roti is best eaten with Thai coffee or tea. I got their Cold Milk Tea, which is perfect in the Phuket heat!

Roti Taew Nam has delicious local breakfast and authentic local vibes. I think it should be on your Phuket eat-inerary. I highly recommend it to you!
